Visual Studio requires assembly language source files to belong to a project, which is a kind of container. A project holds configuration information such as the locations of the assembler, linker, and required libraries. A project has its own folder, and it holds the names and locations of all files belonging to it. If you have not already done so,Right-click here to download a zip file containing an up-to-date Visual Studio 2017project that has been configured for assembly language. After downloading this file, un-zip it into your working directory. It contains a sample asm test file named AddTwo.asm. Follow these steps:
If you plan to build 16-bit applications, you need to add two new commands to the Visual Studio Tools menu. To add a command, select External Tools from the Tools menu. The following dialog will appear, although many of the items in your list on the left side will be missing. Download the batch file here (rename the .txt extension to .bat after downloading): make16_vs2017.txt.
For Visual Studio 2017 and newer, you will need to download the Integrated Help package and/or the appropriate VS Integration package if you wish to use these features.
You can choose a different compiler version for 32-bit (Win32) or 64-bit (x64) platform targets. By default, the latest installed compiler version is selected. Use the Selected compiler drop-down menu to choose from among the available versions. If you want to make a choice for the 64-bit platform as well, click on the x64 tab (VS2017 or later) and choose the compiler there.
We are using the stand-alone installer of SSDT 2017, which can be downloaded from here. It downloads a file named SSDT-Setup-ENU.exe. Once it is downloaded, double-click on it to begin the installation.

Another option is to use a higher version of the MSVC compiler such as 2017 which is 64-bit compatible. It is usually not recommended to use a compiler of a different version than the one used to compile IDL: there could be some library incompatibilities due to the changes between 2 compiler versions which will cause the compilation to fail.

The tools for building using Visual C++ or Platform SDK are in the src\tools\msvc directory. When building, make sure there are no tools from MinGW or Cygwin present in your system PATH. Also, make sure you have all the required Visual C++ tools available in the PATH. In Visual Studio, start the Visual Studio Command Prompt. If you wish to build a 64-bit version, you must use the 64-bit version of the command, and vice versa. Starting with Visual Studio 2017 this can be done from the command line using VsDevCmd.bat, see -help for the available options and their default values. vsvars32.bat is available in Visual Studio 2015 and earlier versions for the same purpose. From the Visual Studio Command Prompt, you can change the targeted CPU architecture, build type, and target OS by using the vcvarsall.bat command, e.g., vcvarsall.bat x64 10.0.10240.0 to target Windows 10 with a 64-bit release build. See -help for the other options of vcvarsall.bat. All commands should be run from the src\tools\msvc directory.
